The Mount Olive Community Garden, in its fourth year of operation, is located at the intersection of Wolfe Road and Route 46 West on the South Branch Preserve. The garden contains 145 plots, managed by approximately 80 gardeners, as well as summer interns and volunteers. About 70% of our gardeners return each year, and many have multiple plots. Last year gardeners donated over 500 lbs of food, alternating between the Mt. Olive Food Pantry and the Drakestown Church Pantry.
On the weekend of August 14, for example, the gardeners donated 74 3/4 lbs of delicious veggies to the Mt Olive Food Pantry. There was at least 15 families enjoying this bounty. There were tomatoes of all types and the zucchinis just keep getting bigger and more beautiful. There were lots of cucumbers and leafy veggies and peppers. A big thank-you to everyone who donated, as well as Ruth and Steve Solomon, who manage the collections each weekend.
The South Branch Preserve, which totals over 200 acres, is protected and preserved by The Land Conservancy and its partners (including Mt. Olive Township). This land was purchased to protect the headwaters of the South Branch of the Raritan River, a drinking water supply source for over 1.5 million New Jersey residents.
